Written September 4, 2000, during the brief time I lived and worked on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, amidst tremendous upheaval and personal change. Much was gained. Much was lost. And the trajectory of my life permanently altered, as it does for us all, really, all of the time.

Walking dreams along West Bay

I've been walking again, and dreaming
Vivid dreams at dusk,
At the edge of Nantucket Sound
In the gray wind unsettled,
Staring with longing eyes
out to sea, beyond the Vineyard,
Beyond the islands,
Into the oncoming night.
It's taken half a lifetime
To find you,
But in a moment remembered how to
Be in love
With you again.
There were rosebushes lining the road to the beach.
The petals lay on the ground
In the dust,
Yet their perfume mingled with the
Brine of the sea
At the outgoing tide along West Bay,
On a light breeze
blowing in from the water,
Where I walked, and
Dreamt of your nearness.
